New Coaching Team for UL

We are delighted to announce Anthony Smith, more usually known as Smithy, will become Chief Coach at ULBC from 20th November.

Smithy’s current role is as Head coach at Lady Eleanor Holles School whose 1st Eight won Championship Women’s eights at the National Schools Regatta in 2019 and 2021. Previously he was at St Paul’s School where he worked with Bobby Thatcher as Assistant Director of Rowing and was a key part of the development of their very fine 1st eight which won the Princess Elizabeth Trophy and Championship Eights at the National Schools Regatta. Smithy’s crews won numerous other National schools and Coupe Gold medals. He also co-coached the British Eight to a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in 2018.

Smithy said “I am thrilled to be taking up this role at a time when ULBC is clearly on the up, as shown by last season’s results. I know what the club is capable of and I look forward to becoming part of the Purple pedigree”.

Smithy will take over from Brian Young who stepped in as Acting Chief Coach in September. We are very grateful to him and all his volunteer helpers.

Smithy will be assisted by Tom Gale who will joins us in January.
