The ULBC Trust

Supporting University of London rowing since 1912.

About the ULBC Trust

The ULBC Trust is a registered charity — UK charity no. 1174721 — established to support University of London rowing. Together with its sister organisation ULBC Trust Inc, a US non-profit corporation with tax-exempt status, the Trust provides the financial foundation that allows ULBC to operate as a genuine high-performance programme.

The Trust works alongside the University of London and the Club to create the environment in which student-athletes can compete and develop at the highest level. Three independent elements, working together: the Trust enables, the Club delivers, and the Boathouse supports.

How ULBC Works — three elements working together: the Trust, the Club, and the Boathouse

The Trust is governed by Trustee Directors elected by its Patrons. It also manages the boathouse on behalf of ULBC and the University of London colleges through UL Boathouse Ltd. UK Trust President: David Townsend. Chairman: Humphry Hatton. Trustees: John Kinnear, Gordon Elliott, Claire Rimmer, Jess Eddie, Giles Monnickendam. US Trust President: Matt Stares.

How the Trust Supports ULBC

Over 90% of ULBC’s funding comes from alumni and the Trust. Less than 10% comes from the University. The programme that has produced 135 Olympic and World Championship medals runs almost entirely on the generosity of former athletes and supporters.

ULBC Trust funding breakdown — 65% coaching, 12% equipment, 8% training camps, 6% recruitment, 5% boathouse, 4% other

Professional Coaching — 65%

The salaries and costs of ULBC’s full-time coaching staff. This is what makes ULBC a high-performance programme rather than a well-organised student club.

Equipment & Maintenance — 12%

The racing fleet, ergometers, and ongoing equipment maintenance. High-quality boats are not optional at this level of competition.

Training Camps — 8%

Subsidised domestic and international training camps that are central to the squad’s competitive preparation each season.

Recruitment & Development — 6%

Athlete recruitment and the development programmes that bring the next generation of rowers into the club.

Boathouse Running Costs — 5%

Day-to-day operational costs of the facility at 81 Hartington Road, Chiswick.

Our Patrons

The Patrons of the ULBC Trust are its full voting members — individuals who have made a significant commitment to University of London rowing through sustained financial support or personal service. Together they provide 65% of the Trust’s annual income.
