Coaching Update

Last summer was a great success for the ULBC; including wins at BUCS, Women’s Henley and Henley Royal Regatta. Throughout the year we’ve had an excellent ‘Team’ culture, particularly evident during Henley week, driven by the coaches and the current athletes

Accordingly, we are sad to receive the resignation of our Chief Coach Hugo Gulliver on his return from coaching the Gold medal men’s eight at the U23 European Championship. Hugo’s leadership and coaching were indispensable to our success, and we wish him the best continuing his coaching career at Oxford Brookes University.

Earlier last season Senior Coach Genevieve Bailhache-Graham announced she was leaving coaching to pursue a career in the City. Gen played an integral role throughout this year’s campaign and coached the Bronze medal Men’s coxed four at the European U23 Championships. The success of last season was built by both coaches over their preceding years at UL, and so we emphasise our gratitude for their high quality work and dedication to UL, especially through the Covid times when their support for the athletes made such a difference.

We are delighted to announce that Brian Young has stepped into the vacancy on a temporary basis pending the appointment of a new permanent Chief Coach. Brian is well known to many from his days as Chief Coach from 2009 to 2012 and since then he has coached the GB U23 team every year with a fantastic medal winning record. The appointment process for the new permanent Chief Coach is well underway with top quality candidates coming forward.

We want the new Chief Coach to play a part in selecting the new Senior Coach and so that appointment process will gather speed only once the Chief Coach is announced. Pending that, some of our very well qualified alumni coaches (many of whom have coached internationally) are stepping in.

Our student athletes have been kept up to date with this process every couple of days and they are looking forward to another successful season.  We are confident the coaching arrangements being put into place will allow the success of last year to continue.

We look forward to a full celebration of a great year at the Annual Dinner on Friday 10th December and hope to see as many there as possible
