UL Boathouse at dusk on the Tideway

World-Class Facilities on the Tideway

Everything you need to train, compete, and develop — in one place.

Train Where It Matters

ULBC athletes train from a purpose-built facility on the historic Tideway — the same stretch of water used for The Boat Race, the Head of the River Race, and the most competitive club rowing in Britain.

Water Training

ULBC athletes train from the University of London Boathouse (ULBH), a purpose-built rowing facility set across 1.5 acres on the tidal Thames between Chiswick and Kew Bridge.

Located on the historic Tideway, our athletes train on one of the most competitive and iconic stretches of water in the world — providing daily exposure to high-performance rowing and race-specific preparation throughout the season.

  • Over 20km of continuous rowable water in either direction
  • Regular fixtures with leading Tideway clubs
  • Daily training on the course used for the UK’s major head races

Land Training

ULBC is one of the few university rowing programmes in the UK with fully integrated land training facilities on-site. Athletes train under the guidance of a dedicated Strength & Conditioning coach, working alongside the coaching team to support performance and prevent injury.

  • Concept2, Bike Erg, and RP3 dynamic ergometers
  • Fully equipped weights gym for structured S&C sessions
  • All facilities based at the boathouse — no commuting between venues

Having everything under one roof keeps training schedules efficient and strengthens the squad culture that defines ULBC.

Athlete Support

The ULBC programme is heavily supported by alumni and the UL Trust, keeping the cost of rowing significantly lower than comparable university programmes in the UK. Additional funding, financial aid, and sports scholarships are available through individual University of London colleges.

Accommodation

ULBC offers subsidised on-site accommodation and bunk-room facilities suited to early morning training. Living around the boathouse strengthens team culture and makes daily training routines straightforward. The boathouse is approximately 25 minutes from Central London (Waterloo) with direct transport links across the city.
