16 Mar UL Women beat Oxford in Boat Race Fixture
The University of London Women’s 1st & 2nd Eights finished their winter’s racing with victories over Oxford University, after beating Oxford Brookes University in side-by-side racing the weekend before.
The UL 1st Eight’s race started on a weak flood tide at Putney (racing to Chiswick Steps), with UL on the Surrey station. As the crews arrived at Barnes Elms it was clear the stream was flowing out, with both crews having to race into the flow.
At Hammersmith Bridge, the UL Women’s 1st Eight, a length down & in the slow water made the decision to move into the bank as the stream was running out and follow the Tideway rules, passing the navigation buoy on the correct side.
Once in fair water the UL crew quickly caught Oxford. Approximately 200 metres before the finish line at Chiswick Steps (as published on the Boat Race course map), as the UL Women’s 1st Eight charged through into the lead, Oxford stopped rowing before the finish line and the umpire somewhat strangely agreed the race was to end.
In the UL Women’s 2nd Eight’s race vs OUWBC’s 2nd Eight, after close racing to Hammersmith, UL took a commanding lead and were leading by 8 lengths by the Finish Line at the Bandstand.
