27 Jun University of London crews set for HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA 2016
The University of London Boat Club (ULBC) have selected two Men’s Eights for Henley Royal Regatta (HRR), qualified a full UL Women’s quad for the first time in 10 years and will be represented in seven crews at this year’s Regatta, four as part of Great Britain senior and development boats.
Two student eights are set to go in the Temple Challenge Cup. The Men’s 1st Eight, winners of Elite Eights at the Met Regatta, are a selected crew on the draw and open their regatta on Wednesday morning against Bristol University. The UL Men’s 2nd Eight have a first round meet with Colombia University of the USA. Both the UL Men’s Eights are stroked by freshers at King’s College, London; Guy SCREATON (formally Abingdon School) and Henk KROON (formally Bedford Modern School).
The UL Women have qualified for the Princess Grace (for elite & international women’s quadruple sculls). The sculling boat, formed after Henley Women’s Regatta (HWR), contains Ally FRENCH (Birkbeck) and Charlotte HODGKINS-BYRNE (Royal Holloway) who took victory sweeping last week, as ULBC won for a 20th year in a row at HWR.
Other UL athletes are also racing, as part of Great Britain composite crews. Rich CLARKE races the Grand (as Nautilus BC). Matilda HORN coxes a GB development Women’s Eight (titled Oxford Uni & Reading RC on the draw) and Ollie COOK, fresh from World Cup gold last weekend in the coxed pair, races the Goblets and is a selected crew. Emily CRAIG is entered into the Princess Grace, as part the Great Britain’s Lightweight Women’s Quad who won silver at last year’s World Championships.
The Great Britain senior team, absent from Henley this year due to their pre-Olympic training camp, have their sights set firmly on Rio now, with a large number of UL alumni set to compete as part of both the British Men’s & Women’s squads. The Saturday of HRR will see the squad announced for the Paralympic Games with a row over the course, including UL’s James FOX, back to back World Champion in the Para-Coxed Four.
