ULBC SUMMER UPDATE – The Olympic Games, Senior & U23 Worlds, FISU, EUSA, HIR and China…

After success and fierce racing at Henley Royal & Henley Women’s Regattas closed the domestic season for UL, July & August are bringing even more excitement for the University of London Boat Club:

The 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

With just over a week until the start of the 2016 Olympics, Team GB’s rowers depart the UK this Friday. UL’s Paul BENNETT and Fran HOUGHTON race the M8+ and W8+. Nathaniel REILLY-O’DONNELL travels as a spare to the British team. James FOX, two time World Champion in the Para 4+, will be be racing for the Gold when the Parlympics start in September.

There will be a large number of UL alumni in Rio competing and in support roles, with six members of the British Women’s Eight having studied at some point at a Univeristy of London college. Other UL alumni include Robin WILLIAMS & Paul STANNARD, both coaching GB crews and Simon COX coaching the Australians. With Team GB will be Lady Ann REDGRAVE and Maurice HAYES providing medical and logistical support, and Richard BUDGETT in his role as Medical Director to the IOC.

Senior & Under 23 World Championships, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Royal Holloway fresher Charlotte HODGKINS-BYRNE has been named in the GB W8+ for the World U23s and Patrick BOOMER, studying Biomedicine at King’s College, London, has been named in the Irish M4x. For the Senior World Championship Ollie COOK has been named in the GB M2+, coxed by UL Assistant Coach and alum Henry FIELDMAN. Emily CRAIG, a World Silver Medalist in 2015, has been named in the GB LW4x and will be looking to push on to the Gold Medal. UL Coach Brian YOUNG has been named as coach to the British U23 M4-, a boat he coached to World Silver last year. UL Coxswain Matilda HORN has been appointed an assistant coach to the GB U23 W4- & 8+.

World University Championships (FISU), Poznan, Poland

Four UL athletes have been selected to represent GB at the World University Championships, three of whom have World U23 experience. Goldsmiths student Ailish SHEEHAN and Matt BEDFORD, a masters student at UCL, have been been named in the W4- and LM4- respectively. Richard CLARKE, a silver medalist in the M4- at the 2015 World U23s, has been named in the M8+. Suzi PERRY has been selected for the the LW2x. UL Chief Coach Phil GRAY has been appointed Lead Coach for the British team for FISU and coaches the M4- and W2-. UL Senior Coach Hugo GULLIVER has been appointed coach to the FISU Men’s 2- and Women’s 2x.

European Universities Rowing Championships (EUSA)Zagreb, Croatia

UL qualified eleven boats for EUSA via BUCS Regatta in May. We sent a M2- of Charlie MIDDLETON, a medical student at UCL, and Patrick BOOMER to Croatia, who came away with an impressive Silver medal behind the Hungarian Olympic Pair.

International Universities Regatta, Wuhan & Changsha, China

UL accepted our annual invite to the International Universities Regatta in China. Both a UL Men’s and Women’s Eight flew to the Far East, and at the time of writing are still traveling back to the UK after competing in two events and taking part in numerous cultural exchanges. Home Countries Regatta (HIR), Cardiff, Wales

UL’s Georgia STATHAM, Nuala GANNON and Meg NEVILLE, the latter two both freshers at King’s College, London, were selected to represent England in the W8+ and W4+ at the 2016 HIR in Cardiff. They came away with Silver and Bronze medals.

Additions to the UL Coaching Staff for September 2016

ULBC is pleased to announce two additions to our coaching staff for the 2017/17 season. Joining Chief Coach Phil Gray & Senior Coach Hugo Gulliver will be two Assistant Coaches; Lewis SLOANE and Jamie SMITH. Sloane joins UL from the Windsor Boys School (finalists in the Fawley at HRR this year) and is currently coaching the GB Junior Quad selected for the Coupe De La Jeunesse. Jamie Smith, current Director of Rowing at UCL (University College, London), has pushed the UCL rowing program on to become one of the strongest of all the UL college boat clubs over the last few years, including a HWR win in 2014. Henry FIELDMAN, who returns to training with the GB senior team full-time next season, moves from being our Assistant Coach to the UL Coxswain Coach.

After this busy summer finally ends, the ULBC squad will take a short break before returning to training on the 17th of September to commence the 2016/17 season.
