22 Feb UL Women win Championship Eights at BUCS HEAD 2016
The UL Women’s 1st Eight, racing in the blue ribbon Championship Eights category, took Gold at BUCS Head on Sunday for the first time in the Univeristy Of London Boat Club’s history. The crew covered the 5km course 9 seconds quicker than Edinburgh University and 11 seconds quicker than hosts Newcastle University.
The UL Women’s 2nd Eight came home as the second fastest university 2nd Eight of the day (taking a Bronze medal in Intermediate Eights in the process). Eights racing took place on Sunday morning, allowing the UL Women to jump into scratch combinations of a quad and coxed fours on Sunday afternoon, winning a Gold medal in Intermediate Coxed Fours and a Silver medal in Championship Coxed Fours, showing strong strength in depth.
The UL Men’s 1st Eights, also racing in Championship Eights, had a tough race having to overtake several slower crews, and eventually recorded the 4th fastest time. With a month to go to the Head of the River, the event on the Tyne offered valuable racing experience. The UL Men’s 2nd Eight was the second fastest university 2nd Eight of the day (and won a Bronze in Intermediate Eights), and the UL Men’s 3rd Eight was the third fastest university 3rd Eight of the day.
Forty-five Univeristy of London students, from nine of the UL colleges, were selected to race for ULBC this weekend but a number of UL colleges also raced, including UCL (who won two medals), RUMS, Queen Mary and King’s College (who won a Silver medal).
The next event for ULBC is Reading University Head, this coming Saturday, as UL prepares for the Women’s Head of the River and Head of River in March.
