UL VICTORIOUS AT HENLEY WOMEN’S – UL secure 21 year winning record at HWR by retaining Coxed Four title for 4th year running

ULBC won the Academic Coxed Four’s title for a fourth year running, made four finals, and won for a 21st year in succession at the regatta, whist UL Women stepped up for Great Britain in Poland and the UL Men set a club record at Marlow Regatta.

UL made four finals on the Sunday of Henley Women’s Regatta 2017. Robyn HART-WINKS (UCL) raced first in the Elite Lightweight 1x. In a close race she just missed out on victory, but will now move into a GB lwt 2x combination to race at Amsterdam Regatta. UL also made the final of Elite Lightweight 2-. Following a solid row in the final they lost to a strong Thames RC pair, containing UL alumna Lowenna Coad. There was victory for UL alumna Suzi Perry in the Senior Lightweight 1x.

There were four athletes racing in purple in a GB U23 composite crew in Elite Eights. After beating Northeastern University of the USA in the semi final, they raced Ohio State University in the final. A close race saw both crews break the course record, but the Americans took the win. Our athletes involved in this crew will now go into final selection trials for the World and European U23 Championships.

The highlight of the day was UL’s victory in the Academic Coxed Four event, for the fourth year running. Two of this crew learnt to row at university with their colleges (UCL and Royal Holloway). The crew beat Imperial College in the semi final, before beating King’s College London (KCL) in the final. Congratulations to KCL for having a strong crew this year and giving us some tough racing.

World Cup 2 also took place this weekend. The GB Women’s Eight, containing UL’s Sara PARFETT (King’s) and coxswain Matilda HORN (alumna), lead much of the final before New Zealand came through to take Gold. A Silver medal though, ahead of the USA in third, is a huge achievement at this early stage of the Olympiad. Emily CRAIG (alumna) raced again in the GB Women’s Lightweight Double, and a strong 4th place sees her and her partner, Kat Copeland, continue to work well in the Olympic class event.

The UL Men raced at Marlow Regatta this weekend, and the UL Men’s 1st Eight set a new club record of 5:37.1 in the A final of Championships Eights. Congratulations to Oxford Brookes who won in a very fast 5:30.8.

The club now prepares for Henley Royal Regatta. There are a number of events taking place at HRR this year for alumni and friends of ULBC. Click here for details.
