15 Aug SUPER SATURDAY FOR ULBC – Olympic Glory for UL athletes & alumni in Rio
It was a Super Saturday for UL athletes and alumni in Rio at the Olympic Games as the GB Men’s & Women’s Eights took GOLD and SILVER respectively.
Olympic GOLD for Paul BENNETT in the GB Men’s 8+ was the culmination of a journey that saw him only learn to row at ULBC eight years ago. Paul was a Mathematics student at King’s College, London before a Henley Royal Regatta win for UL in 2012, soon followed by two World Championships Golds in 2014 & 2015 in the GB Men’s 8+.
Fran HOUGHTON, Jess EDDIE, Katie GREVES & Mel WILSON racing in the GB Women’s 8+ won the SILVER medal. The group, who studied at three of UL’s nineteen colleges (Royal Holloway, UCL and King’s College, London) during their respective times rowing at ULBC, won the first ever Olympic medal for a British Women’s eight, a remarkable and landmark achievement.
Both crews racing on the final day of the regatta were cheered on back in London at the UL Boathouse by current students and alumni (video below).
An exciting summer still hasn’t ended with UL athletes still to race at the Senior & U23 World Rowing Championships, World University Rowing Championships and Paralympic Games: read more here.
