The Four’s Head of the River saw a handful of UL athletes race on the Tideway for the first time this season, before two UL athletes raced the Wingfield Sculls, with Richard Clarke taking victory.
The UL Women’s Quad at the Four’s Head of the River was looking to defend the title of fastest women’s crew from last year. But the crew of Ally FRENCH (GB U23 8+ 2017), Robyn HART-WINKS (GB Snr. Lwt 4x- 2017), Emily CRAIG (GB Snr. Lwt 2x 2017) and super-sub Ellie Lewis had to settle for second behind a Leander crew of World & Olympic Medalists.
The UL Men’s Coxless Four with U23 Silver medalists Patrick SULLIVAN (UCL) & Josh KENT (UCL) and HRR Temple finalists Max TOWNLEY (King’s) & Ben FREEMAN (UCL) impressively made the top 10 overall, mixing it with the Coxless Quads and Senior team sweep crews.
Thursday saw the Wingfield Sculls take place. In the Women’s race UL’s U23 World Champion Charlotte HODGKINS-BYRNE (Royal Holloway) took on Fran Rawlins from Tideway Scullers and UL alumna Suzi Perry racing for Thames RC. Hodgkins-Byrne rowed well off the start, taking the lead till Hammersmith Bridge before a clash with Rawlins saw the TSS sculler row away for victory.
In the Men’s race Richard CLARKE (Birkbeck), U23 World Silver Medalist and World University Champion took on former champion Jamie Kirkwood and a group of scullers from Tideway Sculler’s School. Clarke sat in 5th place at the 1 mile mark before making his move and rowing through the whole field, taking the race lead around Chiswick Eyot. He moved clear and became UL’s first winner of the Wingfield’s since Olympian Matt Wells in 2004 & 2005.
