UL TRIAL EIGHTS 2016 – Fierce racing as Clinton, Leave and Rosberg take victory

On Sunday 4th December the Univeristy of London trial eights racing took place. There was close and fierce racing in both the Men’s and Women’s events, which saw the lead change hands multiple times in crisp and cold conditions on the Tideway.

The Women’s race had ‘Trump’ take on ‘Clinton’ and Trump won the toss and choose the Surrey station. Both crews started fast and were still level as they approached the Mile Post before Trump pushed out to almost a length lead at Hammersmith Bridge. But on the outside of the St. Paul’s bend Clinton attacked back and the crews drew level passing Chiswick Pier. Clinton continued to move and held a narrow lead entering Barnes Bridge, before going on to take a hard fought 2/3 of a length victory.

The political theme continued in the Men’s race, contested between ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’, a nod towards the UK’s Brexit vote last summer. Remain won the toss and again chose Surrey, and with this achieved an early two seat lead as the crews passed the end of Putney Embankment. But with both crews still rating 36 strokes a minute Leave moved into almost a length lead as the crews came under Hammersmith Bridge. As the crews came round the St. Paul’s bend Remain found a better rhythm and moved level before taking a length lead at Chiswick Steps. The race wasn’t over though and Leave raced back level by Barnes Bridge. With the final bend in their favour Leave continued to move forward and took victory by 3/4 of a length.

There was also a Men’s fours reserve race contested between ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Rosberg’. It was a close fought battle to half way with multiple lead changes again. But Rosberg moved into a commanding position in the second half of the race and took victory.

Tight racing under pressure was the ideal close to racing this term before ULBC athletes finish their academic timetables, celebrate Christmas and then head to Avis, Portugal for Winter training camp.
