The 2016/17 season opens fully this weekend for the University of London Boat Club (ULBC) at the British Rowing Championships, with a large number of freshers and graduate students making their debuts in Purple.

Some of the squad commenced their season last weekend at the Pairs Head of The River, racing against 423 other crews, including athletes from this summer’s Olympic Games. ULBC crews came home impressively as the fastest overall Women’s Double (Sara PARFETT, King’s College London & Robyn HART-WINKS, UCL), fastest overall Women’s Pair (Ally FRENCH, Birkbeck & Georgia STATHAM, UCL) and also took victory in the Novice Women’s Double event (Nuala GANNON, King’s College London & Catherine ADOR, King’s College London). There were also placings of 2nd in Elite Men’s Pairs and 3rd in Elite Men’s Doubles & Women’s IM1 Doubles.

ULBC have selected four Men’s Eights and two Women’s Eights for Sunday’s eights racing at the British Championships, with athletes coming from 9 of the University of London’s 18 universities and colleges. Some athletes have also been selected to race Fours and Doubles on Saturday, the first day of competition. A number of athletes will be pulling on the Purple this weekend for the first time, with fresher’s representing King’s College School Wimbledon, Sir William Borlase, Shiplake College, St. Edwards School, Monmouth School, Reading Blue Coat, Shrewsbury School, Reading Rowing Club, Henley Rowing Club and Winchester College.

It’ll also be the first event for many new University of London post-graduate students, who’ve joined ULBC from Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Bath, Nottingham and Loughborough Universities.

The UL Men’s and Women’s 1st Eight’s (listed below), racing in the University Category, feature a mixture of undergraduate and postgraduate students. This will be the first event for Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne since winning a Silver Medal at the World U23 Championships as part of the GB Women’s 8+. The Women’s 1st Eight also contains six athletes who took victories at Henley Women’s Regatta last summer.
