ULBC left BUCS Regatta 2016 with a total of 14 medals and the Women’s Team Trophy after three days of racing in often challenging conditions.

The UL Women’s 1st Eight raced to a Bronze medal in the Championship Eights final, a first ever medal in this event for ULBC, pushing Cambridge University to the line. This was a first Openweight Championship medal for a UL Women’s crew in five years but success in the Eight was then quickly followed by a Gold in the Coxed Four ahead of Newcastle and Oxford Brookes, a Silver in the Coxless four and Quadruple scull and finally Bronze in the Double scull. This unprecedented success in the Championship events coupled with medals in the Intermediate events saw our women crowned Women’s Team Champions for the first time.

The first two days of the regatta saw challenging conditions make racing difficult for all competitors with UL winning 5 medals. On the third and final day a push from the whole club saw a further 9 medals won, with the Men’s pairs contributing four. In the Intermediate pairs UL almost took a clean sweep of the medals but narrowly missed out in the final sprint to come 1st, 3rd and 4th, with the Championship Pair also winning a Bronze. The Lightweight Men’s pair of Mathew Bedford and James Richards took Gold in impressive style, before racing the Lightweight Men’s quad just an hour later, winning Bronze.

This weekend’s results now mean UL has qualified the following boats for EUSA (the European University Rowing Championships): Men’s Coxless Four & Pair. Lightweight Men’s Pair, Double & Quad. Women’s Eight, Coxless Four, Pair, Quad, Double & Single.
